1 Ch. 17:12-13
It shall come to pass, when [David’s] days are fulfilled that, [he] must go to be with [his] fathers, that [YHWH] will set up [David’s] seed after [him], who shall be of [his] sons.
[YHWH] will establish [David’s descendant's] kingdom. [David’s descendant] shall build [YHWH] a [Temple], and [YHWH] will establish his throne forever.
Zec. 6:12-13
Behold, a man whose name is the Shoot, and who shall shoot up out of his place, and build the temple of [YHWH].
And he shall bear the glory and sit and rule upon his throne.
The immediate context of this latter passage may suggest Zerubbabel as the man who builds the Temple and rules on the throne. However, this passage clarifies that the person spoken of is known as “the shoot”. This would point back to Zechariah 3:8:
Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, you and your fellows that sit before you; for they are men that are a sign; behold, I will bring forth My servant the Shoot.
Zerubbabel was a contemporary of Yeshua and would certainly be included in “and your fellows.” The person called “the Shoot” is someone other than Zerubbabel. Moreover, Jeremiah also used the term shoot and applied it to Messiah.
Jer. 23:5, 33:15
Behold, the days come, says YHWH, that I will raise unto David a righteous shoot, and he shall reign as king.
In those days and at that time, I will cause a shoot of righteousness to spring forth unto David. And he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
Zekariah 6:13 ties Nathan’s prophecy to David with Jeremiah’s prophecies to clarify that the Messiah will one day reign as King. It can be assumed that the Messiah is also spoken of in Zekariah 9:9. Ultimately, this points to Zechariah 14.
Zec. 14:1, 3, 4, 16, 17
And YHWH shall be King over all the earth.
And YHWH shall go forth, and He shall fight against those nations...
And on that day, His feet shall stand upon the Mount of Olives...
And it shall be that all who are left from all the nations which came up against Yerushalayim shall go up from year to year to bow themselves to the King—YHWH.
And it shall be, that if anyone of the families of the earth does not come up to Yerushalayim to bow himself before the King—YHWH.
Who is going to fight against the nations who surround Jerusalem? Who is going to stand on the Mount of Olives? Who is going to rule and reign as king on Mount Zion?
Will it be YHWH, a spiritual Being who told Moses that no mortal can see Him and live (Exo. 33:20)? Or will it be the Messiah, the Son of YHWH (1 Ch. 17:13; Psa. 2:7; Pro. 30:4)?
[Some prophecies state that David will be future king over Israel (Jer. 30:9, Eze. 37:24, & Hos. 3:5 for example) and others state that YHWH will be Israel’s king (Zec. 14:9, Oba. 1:21, & Mic. 4:7 for example). There is no conflict if we understand that the Messiah is both the son of David and the Son of YHWH.]
Isaiah 11:10-12 speaks of King Messiah (the “shoot of the stock of Jesse”) as coming two times in history. The first time, he will attract the Gentile nations, die, and ascend to the heavens. The second time, he will gather his people from the “four corners of the earth.”
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the root of Jesse stands for an ensign of the peoples. Unto him shall the nations seek. And his resting place shall be glorious.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that YHWH will set His hand again the second time to recover the remnant of His people, that shall remain from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.
And He will set up an ensign for the nations, and will assemble the dispersed of Israel, and gather together the scattered of Judah from the four corners of the earth.
